Puppies 50 cents.
AWASH IN MASTIFFS! (from pdl #95)
"Why aren't they selling for 50 cents ?"
I'm not a math whiz, so you who are, follow along and steer me back on course, okay?
I know that a healthy giant sized female dog can have 10 - 12 pups per litter and have 2 litters per year. Now, if I start with a pair of mastiffs, and I keep every female puppy and I occasionally trade a male pup for an unrelated male pup, for 6 years, how many female mastiffs will I own?
Let say she has 10 pups per litter, two litters per year, and 10 pups are females and ten pups are males. We can assume that there is always a willing male dog, and that most of the male pups are sold. Lets say that the first first litter was born back in the year 2000 (because it ends in all zeros) .
In 2000, the mastiff pair produce 10 female pups, and we keep them all. To make it easier, we will assume that the first litter of each year is always born on January 1st and is always ten female pups, and that the second litter is always born July 1st and always has 10 male pups. (I guess you'd have to assume I know a lot about reproductive control).
2001, we have the original mother and her 10 daughters, that's 11 females, each having 10 female pups, so we have 110 female puppies born. (I love multiplying by 10, all you have to do id ad a zero behind it).
2002, We have 11 mamas and 110 one year old females, that's 121 mother dogs this year, so we add 1,210 more females.
2003. Mothers: 211 plus 1,1210 = 1,331. More female pups: 13,310. I wonder how many buckets of poo that many mastiff would make each day?
2004. If we haven't gone broke trying to feed all these dogs, we have: 1,331 experienced females, plus 13,310 new mothers = 14,641 mama dogs, and 146,410 new female pups.
2005. Assuming we have the whole town helping us care for all these dogs (or that I'm real clever at farming them out with co-ownership and contracts) we now have 14,641 matron mother mastiff and 146,410 having their first litter, which totals 161,051 mothers, but I'm going to retire the original mother (from 2000) as she might start having litters of only eight soon, so we have 'only' 161,050 mothers, and therefor
one million, six hundred ten thousand, five hundred more female mastiff puppies.
2006. I guess if we breed all the females (except the 10 due to retire this year), we'd have like 17 million female pups and then like 17 million male pups. Lets not breed them anymore. Call dog rescue and ask them to come get the nearly two million unsocialized grown mastiffs we don't need anymore.
---------------
So why do puppies cost so much when people use to hang "free puppies" signs on corners, and people use to sit in front of stores all day long to give away a litter of puppies?
I don't believe it was because the pet owners wanted to never have a litter of puppies, but because people who sold puppies for money, sold their puppies only with mandatory spay/ neuter contracts.
Now, one can make money selling some kinds of puppies - but few people do, why?
Is dog breeding becoming unionized?
